HIV AIDS

Testing

You can get an HIV test at any local sexual health clinic (please click on our Sexual Health Clinics link for more info). A doctor, nurse or health professional will take a small blood sample that is then sent to a lab to be tested. Alternatively you can have a "blood-spot test" - this involves a tiny pinprick to your finger. We will always help you to fully understand what the test involves and answer any queries you may have.

Treatment

If you test positive for HIV, we will discuss the best treatment methods with you. There is no cure for HIV however medicines known as Antiretroviral Treatment (ART - and also sometimes known as combined or combination therapy) will help reduce the level of HIV.

There have been big advances in treatment and treatment can now be as simple as taking just one or two pills a day. Do remember that many people taking treatment for HIV live a long and healthy life however it is important to get diagnosed as soon as possible to get the right specialist care and support.

Do you have Symptoms?

If you have symptoms you should get yourself tested to avoid infection developing and from transferring it to someone else.
